Embracing Resilience and Perspective.

The most common question I receive, not only recently but throughout my life, is, "How do you maintain such unwavering positivity regardless of the circumstances?" It's a question that genuinely puzzles me and sometimes catches me off guard, almost leaving me astonished. Am I truly that positive or even that different? Don't get me wrong, I deeply appreciate and cherish such a glowing comment, and honestly, I have reached a point in my life where I take pride in it. However, like all of you, I too have my moments and I am not immune to occasional bouts of sadness. But if I were to identify two essential skills that help me navigate those challenging times, they would undoubtedly be resilience and the power of perspective.

Resilience:

Resilience, in its essence, speaks for itself. It's about never giving up, although I must admit, there have been moments where the idea of surrendering has crossed my mind. I have briefly mentioned this in a couple of episodes before, but there were indeed times in high school when thoughts of suicide and death haunted me. I remember wondering if anyone would even attend my funeral. It's something I had never openly acknowledged until now, something I had seemingly forgotten. Then, when Jimmy passed away, there were instances where I berated myself to such an extent that it led me down a dark path, where I simply wanted to numb all feelings. That period was quite possibly the lowest point in my life. So, yes, I have experienced moments where the thought of giving up permeated my mind. But I didn't succumb, and now I'm here to tell you, don't give up either. It does get better. And it's adopting the perspective that things will improve that cultivates a resilient mindset. It's a mindset we can all learn and develop by incorporating habits that foster its growth.

Perspective:

So, what is it about perspective that proves to be so helpful? In my opinion, viewing things from a different angle is an incredibly powerful tool, especially when faced with tough situations. You often hear people say, "It could be worse." And maybe it could, but that doesn't diminish the validity of your own struggles. Your feelings are never unjustified. Absolutely not. So when I talk about perspective and its role in fostering a positive mindset, it's not about punishing yourself. No, not at all. It's about finding an alternative angle, a new perspective that allows you to learn something instead. It's about reclaiming power from the situation, whatever it may be, and recognizing that there is something to be learned, a chance to grow. We are always, always in a state of learning.

Actionable Points:

1. Practice Gratitude: Start each day by acknowledging three things you're grateful for.

2. Cultivate Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding during difficult times.

3. Seek Support: Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family, or a coach who uplifts and motivates you.

4. Embrace Challenges: View setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning.

5. Focus on Solutions: Instead of dwelling on problems, shift your focus to finding solutions and taking action.

6. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem.

My positive vibe, energy, smile, and outlook have undoubtedly been shaken, and I'm certain they will be tested again in the future. However, I refuse to give up. I wholeheartedly embrace the opportunity to continuously learn, grow, and evolve as a human being. It is a journey that excites me, and I am determined to make the most of it.
